"Gold" on Metallic Silhouette Match

... very, very happy! After a 5 points score, and a 5th place overall, on the 1st match on May, 2010, I just got the 1st place - "Gold" - with a 13 points score, on the 2nd Metallic Silhouette Match this morning, October 24th, 2010, at Carregueira, Belas, Portugal. My personal goals were to at least equal the previous 5 point score, the "best" was to reach the 10 point mark... - so, getting up to 13 points (with the current national record set at 18 points!) was a great goal achievment.

The 13 points were distributed for 2 chickens at 40 meters, 4 pigs at 60 meters, 4 turkeys at 77 meters and 3 rams at 100 meters. Best "momentum" was the 2nd row of pigs were I downed 3 / 5.

My "good old" Ruger 10/22 Target, heavly tuned with Volquartsen "kits", with the B&C composite stock and a Hakko 8-32X scope over Sportmatch UK mounts, using Federal Champion Target 40 grains .22 LR ammo proved well balanced - and all the (last week) previous sight in and training proved nicely accurate and solid.

Metallic Silhouette and BR50 International Sporter Training

Last Saturday, October 16th, 2010, I went to the Carregueira shooting range to "sight in" and train for Metallic Silhouette and Benchrest 50 International Sporter class.

For mettalic silhouette ( IMSSU ) I took my "old" and trusty .22 LR Ruger 10/22 Target (with an extensive array of Valquartsen kits on it) mounted on a Bell & Carlson composite stock (model "Anschutz" - Sportsmen Team Challenge/Silhouette) with a Hakko 8-32x scope over Sportsmatch UK reach forward 2 piece high mounts - a "special" version with extra height on the back - so that I can gain extra elevation "click space" - since for the 40 (Chicken), 60 (Pig), 77 (Turkey) and 100 (Ram) meters targets I sure will need all extra elevation I can on the top turret .

that allows to "reset" the zero markings

Using Federal Champhion Target ammo I proceeded with approx. 50 shoots for sight in with the new Sportsmatch UK mounts (the previous lacked the extra back elevation of this particular model). Afterwards using paper printed silhouettes I proceeded with approx. 60 shots precision training from a benchrest position. Very happy with the results - next match will be coming next Sunday, October 24th, 2010.

I then proceeded to sight in and training with my new setup for the "light" class of .22 LR Benchrest 50 shooting (the "International Sporter" class, with a max. overall weight of 8 1/2 lbs, approx. 3.856 grams) - a J. G. Anschütz 1416 rifle with a "custom shop" Leupold Competition Hunter 6x42mm "extra thin reticle" on top using Sportsmatch UK mounts. Supported by a Caldweel "The Rock" shooting rest with leather Protektor front and rear bags, I managed to get very nice results with my trusty Lapua Center-X .22 LR ammo. Approx. 40 shots were spent on scope sight in and another 60 shots went to training - with some impressive grouping and, on a match simulation, with some "full house" X scored to keep as "souvenir".

521 out of 600 points with vintage JGA rifle model 1400 at 50 meters

This Saturday, Oct. 9th, 2010, competing along 47 shooters, I managed to score 521 / 600 points, and to reach 13th place (2nd best along my fellow Club shooters) on the Portuguese Shooting Federation Standard 50 meter (55 yards) rifle national match. The match was held at the 50 meter Shooting Range of Jamor's National Sports Complex (CNDJ - "Complexo Desportivo Nacional do Jamor") at Oeiras, Lisboa, Portugal and was held under overcast weather with occasional rain drops.

This was my first at this particular precision rifle shooting competition (60 shoot, standing, open iron sights, standard rifles, ISSF pistol target 25 meters held at 50 meters) - and with only one single training session before, with a mere 60 shoots, 35 of them for sights adjustment). Thereby I'm very satisfied with this result, with an average score of 8,68 points per shoot (on a 60 series) - when on the previous Sunday training my best average out of 25 shoot series was lower, 8,24 .

My 60 shoot match score, with 5 shoot per match target and unlimited essays on 2 targets had the following partial 10 shoot series: 85, 87, 92, 86, 83, 88. According to my match notes, my best 5 shoot series was the 5 th with the partials 10, 10, 10, 9, 9 (48) and the worst was the 10th the the partials 9, 9, 8, 6, 6 (38) - this two 6 (successive!) due to "rookie" errors on the pistol grip handling.

Overall scores - 47 national competitors
I score 521/600 and reached the 13th place

I competed on line # 25 on the first morning entry

I competed with my "vintage" (late 1970s) J.G. ANSCHÜTZ Model 1400 .22 LR rifle using Lapua "Training" (so called "tin can grade ammo") standard 40 grains ammo. Along with my shooting kit were Peltor light protective sound ear mufflers, italian made "Smart Reloader" .22 LR plastic carry boxes and a large non slip accessories mat. Along the bench is my Bushnell Spacemaster 15x-45x spotting scope, collapsible and angled, model 787345.

Custom Made Ginb Stock for HW35

On March, 2010 I decided to compete on INATEL's break barrel air rifle championship (and, in fact, on all other Portuguese Shooting Federation official break barrel matches) using a 4,5mm Weihrauch HW35 "F" model (the low power, "rekord" trigger edition) but to "ditch" the original (boring and common maple) stock and to invest on a custom made tropical wood stock by the italian indonesia-living "master" Ginb.

Custom Teak doreng wood Ginb stock on HW35

I decided to use as a "base" Ginb's Model 10, in light tropical Teak doreng wood, finished with teak oil, but to made it all along the specific and strict dimensions from the national regulation. Ginb was very professional and generous to immediately accept this specific request and to start building it.

... the very strict dimension regulations (INATEL)

As "luxury" extras I added fully engraved metal trigger guard and recoil pad (along with a rubber option), a pistol grip with a metal spearator and a dark hard wood base and, la pièce de résistance, a 10 grams 92,5% silver plaque with Ginb custom work signature personalized with my own name.

92,5% silver plaque with "Pedro Mateus  |  Hand Crafted by Ginb "

Upon arrival the cheek piece was found to be too high and too "rightish fat" for my shooting stance - with the generous help of my good friend Rui Vilhena, and a couple of hours at work on his "precious tool filled workshop", it was trimmed and shaped down, re-sanded and re-oiled (I just love the smell of teak oil) up to presentation grade again (impossible to find out any difference from the original finishing). Double-custom work made right to fit! Bellow you can watch a short video and some photos of Rui Vilhena's work...
